WOODLIN PTA LISTSERVE USER GUIDELINES:
- Sign your messages: End your messages with your name and how you are related to the Woodlin community (for example, “Jane Doe, mother of a 3rd grader.”)
- Use “Reply” and “Reply All” appropriately: Use “Reply” when responding to a listserve message if you message is intended only for the person who sent the original. Use “Reply All” if your response will be helpful to the entire listserve.
- Discuss issues/problems, not individuals: Keep discussion of difficult issues focused on the issues/problems, not the people involved. Do not name individuals in a way that is negative, harmful, or defamatory—even if the individual is NOT a member of the listserve. Please use names, though, when sending thank-yous and kudos!
- Follow the Washington Post rule: Remember the listserve is a public communication, not a private conversation. Do not put anything in a listserve message that you would not be comfortable seeing—with your name attached—on the pages of the Washington Post.
- Private communications should remain private: An e-mail that was sent to you individually should not be forwarded to the listserve without the permission of the original sender.
- Avoid speculation: Avoid messages that pass on information that might not be true or might only be partially true.
- Follow the golden rule: Treat other people on the listserve the same way you would want them to treat you. Please disagree in a friendly and respectful manner.
- Be careful with humor and sarcasm: Tone of voice rarely translates in an email message.
- Reread your e-mail before sending: Rereading your e-mail before you send it may help you spot missing words or other things that may be confusing.
- No campaigning: The Woodlin PTA is a non-partisan, non-profit organization, and so our listserve cannot be used for campaigning. Do not recommend voting for or against specific candidates on the listserve. However, it’s fine to talk about the issues.
